Russia vs. USA: Smoking and Obesity

Two big, very noticeable differences between Russia and the USA:

1. Everybody here in Moscow smokes. Well, almost everybody.

2. Nobody here in Moscow is overweight. Well, almost nobody. Our MBA group sat in the Food Court in a popular mall near Red Square, drinking $2 beers, and watched Russians walk by for about 45 minutes looking for somebody who could be considered either "overweight" or "obese." In that time, we only saw a few Russians, out of many hundreds who walked by, who would be considered overweight, and not a single obese person. Even after being in Moscow for 4 days, I don't think we've seen a single obese Russian, and very, very few overweight Russians. Maybe that's because they all smoke?

You're downtown. Get out into the suburbs and it's very different.

The lack of obesity is probably because they don't sit around drinking $2 beers. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Vodka, cigarettes, and walking appear to be the solution to leaving a young and slim corpse.

Read in the WSJ that life expentency has declined to 59 years of age for men under Vladamir Putin.

While obesity may not be a concern, there is definitely a declining population.

The answer, of course, is edible cigarettes.

Well, according to the Shangri-La Diet Europe, and I imagine Russia too, uses real sugar not fructose in their soft drinks. Drinking one of their soft drinks several hours after a meal seems to disassociate calories and meals, so you don't get as hungry. Or according to Weston Price they eat biologically active drinks like kvas and the microbes quickly convert sugar into lactic acid which doesn't affect insulin levels and you get a low carb diet with no effort.

During our visit, we noticed that the majority of the women dressed in a fashionably attractive manner. Some women dressed in an almost provocative manner while at work; tight dresses with heels or boots. One of the women on our trip and I discussed whether it would be as accepted in the US...No.

The russian women seemed to put extra effort into making sure they were visually appealing, while here in the US ..."It's the Resume, Stupid!"

The russian women had many things going for them that US women did as well. However, there was one thing that the russian women lacked...hostility.
